Response to "Acquaintance molestation and youth-serving organizations" by Kenneth V. Lanning and Park Dietz.

چکیده
Lanning and Dietz clearly lay out the patterns of acquaintance molestation in youth-serving organizations, a service to anyone who works with youth, as well as parents, and children who participate in these organizations. Nearly everything argued in their article is true for schools. Using school examples, I will illustrate what Lanning and Dietz’s four “misunderstood phenomena” look like in schools where they converge to create organizations in which 7% of students report physical sexual misconduct directed toward them by an adult in the school. When verbal and visual sexual exploitation is included in the list, 1 in 10 students are victims of educator sexual misconduct. I write this commentary as someone who has studied educator sexual conduct for the past 20 years and who serves as an expert witness in state and federal litigation where children have been abused by school personnel. The patterns I discuss come from my research, from my involvement as an expert, and from my experience as a professor in a university administrator preparation program who also works with school personnel to prevent educator misconduct.
